New Orleans is a city with a long sporting history. From the Saints to the birth of the Jazz to the evolution of the Hornets to the Pelicans of today, these teams join several local universities to make up a wealth of sports options in NOLA. One that may fly under the radar to those unfamiliar with the city is the New Orleans Zephyrs. Currently serving as the Miami Marlins’ Triple-A affiliate, the Zephyrs boast over a century of baseball history that saw them operate under a few different names, affiliates and a few cities along the way before finding their way to Metairie’s Zephyr Field.
In 1993, the then-Denver Zephyrs came to New Orleans after the Colorado Rockies made minor league baseball redundant in the Mile High City. By moving to NOLA, the team didn’t need to change its name because of the beloved Zephyr Roller Coaster at Pontchartrain Beach–immediately establishing a rapport with residents. Despite winning several titles since arriving in New Orleans, the Zephyrs biggest historical impact on the city came after Hurricane Katrina.
With the team wrapping up their season just a few days prior to the hurricane hitting our city, the Zephyr’s stadium had time to recover from the damage. By the 2006 season’s start, the team was ready to take the field once again. In doing so, they became the city’s first professional sport to resume play–providing another positive boost for the city’s post-Katrina rebound.
Whether you are looking for a day away or looking to spend a quality day out with the family, consider a quick trip over to Metairie and the 10,000-seat Zephyr Field. Catch the stars of tomorrow before they crack the big leagues. With a price you can’t beat and the beautiful weather of New Orleans, the Zephyrs are an excellent idea all year.
And now, the Zephyrs are about to start a search for a new team name in 2017, and they need our help! Click here for more information on the search that runs for April 25 thorugh May 6 then tell us what name you’d like to see the team adopt.
